about

16-year-old Max Blansjaar spent the first few years of his musical career as a virtuoso classical pianist. In late 2017 he started to experiment with his unique brand of lo-fi pop music, writing and recording a collection of songs on an old computer at his school. The result was Blansjaar’s debut EP Spit it Out!, a record that captured attention with its seamless combination of chunky grunge guitars, unusual samples and intelligent, witty lyricism.

Life’s Too Easy represents a step forward, albeit one in largely the same direction. Bright, percussive synth lines decorate the shuffling guitar part at the heart of the track, while the happy-go-lucky production style sits in contrast to some noticeably darker lyrical content. Touching on themes of powerlessness and self-sacrifice, the new cut is a bittersweet picture of falling in love, set against the backdrop of Blansjaar’s signature DIY pop sound.

Max says “Life’s Too Easy is about being lost. It’s about life happening around you, rather than it being under your control - you’re stood outside the house, looking in through the window. Sometimes we feel confused and powerless, and this song is an attempt at a concrete documentation of that feeling.”

Beanie Tapes is releasing the third tape edition of Max’s EP Spit It Out! with an updated track list featuring the new single on 19 July. ✨
